Previous events and recordings
The ITD Alliance Asia Regional Network is a network of individuals and institutions that aim to increase connections and knowledge sharing among people engaged in inter- and transdisciplinary practice, research and education in the Asia region and to strengthen our global voice about the unique characteristics of Asia.
The network was founded in March 2026 by the ITD Alliance. The ITD Alliance is grateful to institutional member Hong Kong Baptist University for providing secretariat services for the network. Activities to achieve the aims and expand the network are being developed by our organising team.
Through webinars and other events we aim increase connections and share knowledge throughout Asia about inter- and transdisciplinarity.
Survey on Transdisciplinary (TD) Education, Training and Capacity Building in Asia
We invite you to contribute your expertise to a survey designed to map and understand the current landscape of transdisciplinarity capacity building specifically for the Asia region. A dedicated section of this survey captures specific data intended to foster exchange and collaboration across the ITD Alliance Asia Regional Network. Explicit permissions are requested within the survey regarding how provided information will be shared and utilized.
Estimated Time: 15–20 minutes
Deadline: September 20, 2026
Target Audience: Educators, researchers, practitioners, and organizers who offer educational courses, training, workshops, modules and other capacity building initiatives
Your input will directly contribute to documenting transdisciplinary capacity building across the region, identifying gaps, and strengthening future capacity-building frameworks.
This survey is hosted by Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN), an institutional member of the ITD Alliance, and undertaken as part of the GAIA Project, supported by the Asia-Pacific Network for Global Change Research (APN), and Future Earth Asia network.
Your insights are essential to building a clearer picture of TD efforts in the region. If you have any questions or would like to suggest colleagues who should participate, please feel free to reach out Ria Lambino (rlambino@chikyu.ac.jp).
Thank you for your time and leadership in this space.

The inaugural webinar of the Global Alliance for Inter- and Transdisciplinarity (ITD Alliance) Asia Regional Network “Reimagining Higher Education for Complex Societies: Two Examples from Transdisciplinary Teaching in Asia” featured Dr Glos Ho (Hong Kong Baptist University) and Dr. Yasuhisa Kondo (Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Japan). It was moderated by Dr Seongsook Choi (University of Edinburgh).
A focus on transdisciplinarity, especially in education, is gaining momentum in Asia. This webinar provided examples from leading institutions in China and Japan on undergraduate and graduate education, respectively, to provide the basis for further discussion. Hong Kong Baptist University (HKBU) has developed signature transdisciplinary undergraduate programmes, including a unique individualised major that enables students to integrate knowledge across disciplines and collaborate on real-world challenges, as well as a flagship 9-unit Global Challenges course addressing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The presentation focused on HKBU’s strategies for embedding transdisciplinarity in both curriculum design and institutional culture. The Research Institute for Humanity and Nature (RIHN) in Japan launched (in 2023) a PhD programme titled Global Environmental Studies (GES) at The Graduate University for Advanced Studies, SOKENDAI, which is a national university system consisting of inter-university research institutes. This programme is characterised by faculty members’ academic diversity, ranging from cultural and social studies, biological sciences, physical sciences, and mathematical and information sciences. Students conduct project-based research with a flavor of transdisciplinarity under a team-based supervision system. The presentation focused on the achievements and challenges of this (de facto) first authentic transdisciplinary graduate school in Japan.
The presentations were followed by a lively discussion with 52 participants attending.
